New insights on wind turbine wakes from large‐eddy simulation: Wake contraction, dual nature, and temperature effects

چکیده

Large-eddy simulation (LES) has been adopted to study wind turbine wakes because it can capture fine-scale details of turbulent flows and interactions with turbines. Here, we use the LES version Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model an actuator disk gain insights on several wake effects that have traditionally difficult measure. The first finding is a “dual nature,” meaning speed deficit behaves differently from added kinetic energy (TKE) two are not co-located in space. For example, peaks at hub height reaches ground within 8D (D rotor diameter), but TKE near tip generally remains aloft. Second, temperature changes driven by area atmospheric stability. combination these factors determines sign intensity vertical heat flux divergence below rotor, convergence warming associated stable conditions weak modest cooling unstable conditions. Third, do expand indefinitely, as suggested similarity theory applied deficit, eventually stop expanding actually contract, different rates depending implication findings that, order wakes, sufficient focus alone, also important yet deficit.

Atmospheric Turbulence Effects on Wind-Turbine Wakes: An LES Study

A numerical study of atmospheric turbulence effects on wind-turbine wakes is presented. Large-eddy simulations of neutrally-stratified atmospheric boundary layer flows through stand-alone wind turbines were performed over homogeneous flat surfaces with four different aerodynamic roughness lengths. Emphasis is placed on the structure and characteristics of turbine wakes in the cases where the in...

Simulation of wind turbine wakes using the actuator line technique.

The actuator line technique was introduced as a numerical tool to be employed in combination with large eddy simulations to enable the study of wakes and wake interaction in wind farms. The technique is today largely used for studying basic features of wakes as well as for making performance predictions of wind farms. In this paper, we give a short introduction to the wake problem and the actua...

Terrain effects on characteristics of surface wind and wind turbine wakes

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the interferences of wind turbines sited over hilly terrains in order to elucidate the underlying physics to explore/optimize design of wind turbines sitting over complex terrains for higher power yield and better durability. The experiments were conducted in an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel with wind turbines sited over two-dimensiona...

Numerical computations of wind turbine wakes and wake interaction - Optimization and control

In the present thesis the wake flow behind wind turbines is analyzed numerically using large-eddy simulations. The wind turbine rotors are modeled by using either the actuator disc method or the actuator line method in which the blades are represented by body forces computed with airfoil data. Using these models, the boundary layers of the turbine blades are not resolved and most of the computa...

Aerodynamics of wind turbine wakes Literature review

This report reviews the available literature on the aerodynamics of wind turbines and wind farms. Firstly, two introductory chapters are devoted to the physics of the flow around a wind turbine and the existing engineering models for blade and wake aerodynamics. The focus of this work is however on the numerical modeling of wakes. The difficulties in solving the Navier-Stokes equations are disc...
